December 4 – Welcome, Introduction, and New HR Topics
A brief introduction and overview of the program, GoToWebinar, and Yahoo Groups platforms for new course participants. We will review legal developments and recent changes in California employment laws, rules, regulations, and court decisions that can affect HR. We will survey survey topics that particularly interest you with the objective of including them where we can in the program.
December 9 – Time Off: Vacations, Paid Time Off, FMLA, CFRA, and PDL Leaves of Absence
Integration; PFL and SDI Wage Replacement, Miscellaneous Leaves and Time Off
Review and discuss employer legal requirements applicable to vacations, sick leave, holidays, and paid time off; also Kin Care. We will focus on how overlapping leaves, state and federal, such as FMLA, CFRA, and PDL, should be applied and integrated; discuss SDI and Paid Family Leave. We will close with a discussion of how SDI and PFL apply to leaves of absence.
December 10 – Employment Discrimination and Training Requirements
Discuss the role of California’s Fair Employment and Housing Act (FEHA) and its protection against discrimination and retaliation, California’s protected categories including the newly added categories. We will review legal processes including claims and lawsuits, investigations, penalties and measures involved in legal cases. We will also review new disability discrimination requirements under California law. Finally, we will review and discuss California’s AB 1825 Supervisor Sexual Harassment Prevention training.
December 11 – Workplace Safety, Workers Compensation, and other Health and Safety Requirements
This session will address California’s requirement for all employers to publish an Injury and Illness Prevention Plan (IIPP), identify an IIPP’s required components, review heat illness protections, and other laws addressing workplace safety. We will also discuss Workers’ Compensation, who is covered, who is not, what is covered, types of injuries, the Log 300, 300A, and 301 forms.
December 15 – At-Will Employment, Wrongful Termination, Privacy, and HR Certification Overview
We will review the definition and meaning of at-will employment in California; also, terminating at-will employees, wrongful termination issues and public policy violations. California’s privacy requirements will be covered particularly in light of the National Labor Relations Board’s aggressive actions addressing National Labor Relations Act Section 7 employee rights. Finally, we will discuss professional HR certification and what it’s all about. The program will finish with a wrap-up and Q&A.
About the Presenter
Bill Kelly, SPHR- CA, is a Principal and HR Consultant for Kelly HR. Bill's professional background includes 22 years of HR leadership roles in corporate management and 15 years of HR consulting experience. His extensive HR experience includes staffing, compliance, compensation & benefits, training, safety, and government contract management. As an adjunct faculty member, Bill taught HR courses for U.C. Berkeley and currently teaches certification preparation courses for NCHRA. His past and present professional leadership activities include serving on the Board of Directors for SHRM, HRCI, NCHRA, and Marin County Personnel Commission.
Cancellations received less than seven calendar days from the program date are not refundable. If cancellation within seven days of the program is unavoidable, a credit for a future event will be granted, minus a $75 administration fee ($15 for regional meetings). Credits must be used within one year of issue. A substitute attendee is allowed at the applicable NCHRA member/non-member rate in lieu of credit.
