October 13 – Welcome and Introduction
An overview of the course material and an introduction to the GoToWebinar and Yahoo Groups platforms we will use during the program. We will also discuss which employment laws affect you and close the session with a discussion of California’s current postings and notices requirements.
October 17 – Laws That California HR Practitioners Need to Know
This session will focus on what’s new this year that you need to know about new laws, rules, and regulations that address hot topics such as employee or independent contractor status, personnel records and privacy, wage and hour laws, salaries and other compensation, work hours, Paid Family Leave changes, miscellaneous time off, employment discrimination, disciplining, and terminating at-will employees.
October 20 – Recruiting/Selection Practices, Recordkeeping, and Legally Compliant Job Classifications
In this session, we will discuss effective recruiting, testing, interviewing, and selection procedures; also, describe effective record-keeping techniques. Discussion will include I 9 procedures and California requirements for exempt and non-exempt job classifications, and how to make legally compliant job classification (exempt or non-exempt) decisions.
October 24 – California Wage and Hour Laws
We will cover federal and state wage and hour laws, how these laws interrelate and which prevails when conflicts arise. We’ll cover California’s 17 wage orders and determine which apply to your business. We’ll discuss how these laws are enforced, and recordkeeping requirements. We’ll also cover requirements relative to wage payments, work hours, overtime, meal and rest breaks, “premium pay” for break violations, special pay requirements, enforcement, and penalties.
October 27 – Unemployment, State Disability Insurance, Paid Family Leave, Disabilities and How to Deal with Them
We will address rules and regulations applicable to unemployment insurance and EDD new-hire reporting requirements. We will also cover California State Disability Insurance (SDI) and Paid Family Leave (PFL) programs work as well as address how to deal with disability situations in the workplace. We will close with a brief summary of HR certification, what it is and what it takes to become certified.
About the Presenter
J.D. Sanders. J.D. holds his Master’s in Education, as well as his SHRM-SCP and SPHR-CA Certifications. He founded his own consulting firm (J.D. Sanders Consulting), and has over 20 years of experience, including senior HR positions at Silicon Graphics, Irwin Home Equity and Lam Research.
J.D.’s dedication and passion for HR is exemplified by his volunteer service as a past member of the NCHRA Governing Board, the Santa Clara Regional Board and the Certification Advisory Committee.
Cancellations received less than seven calendar days from the program date are not refundable. If cancellation within seven days of the program is unavoidable, a credit for a future event will be granted, minus a $75 administration fee ($15 for regional meetings). Credits must be used within one year of issue. A substitute attendee is allowed at the applicable NCHRA member/non-member rate in lieu of credit.
