Years ago, I watched Dorie Clark, an up and coming political consultant, pivot her career to focus more broadly on marketing and business strategy. I’ve marveled ever since at how quickly she’s climbed into the ranks of the most respected business thinkers in the world. Today, she contributes to the Harvard Business Review, she counts Google and the World Bank among her clients, and her first book, Reinventing You, was a bestseller.
Clark’s success hasn’t come just from what she knows—although I’m always eager for her insights—but also from her hustle. Perhaps “hustle” isn’t a very sophisticated term, but it most accurately describes her whirlwind activity as she engages on social media, pumps out a steady stream of articles, speaks and networks at numerous conferences, writes books, and even organizes dinner meetings with fellow authors around the country. Hustle.
Fortunately, Clark’s new book, Stand Out: How to Find Your Breakthrough Idea and Build a Following Around It, gives the rest of us a blueprint so that we, too, can make a difference in the world. Clark doesn’t actually tell us how she’s doing it—she’s too modest for that—instead, she interviewed more than 50 top thought leaders including: Gary Vaynerchuk, Rachael Ray, David Allen, David Burkus, Robert Cialdini, Nate Silver, and many others.
