How do you handle performance management? Do you issue directives, then say nothing or criticize after performance happens? Do you wish and hope, or ask for favors, then use your disappointed voice/face when you don't like the outcome? Do you attempt to get all the results yourself?

The most effective leaders operate as performance advisors, sometimes called mentors or coaches. These leaders use a set of skills that get people thinking and taking responsibility in their roles — at all levels in an organization.

Discover a set of skills to use when advising and guiding others — whether you're an HR partner working with the CEO, or a first line supervisor working with an hourly worker. Learn how to:

• Set performance expectations and goals
• Ask open-ended questions and listen to the answers
• Give performance feedback
• Solve problems, including the right way to do brainstorming
• Ask for commitments and plans
• Mentor

You'll get hands-on with a couple of these practical skills and learn three problem solving models that get people engaged and taking responsibility for their performance.
